Susan G. Komen and Planned Parenthood
Komen pulled their funding for breast cancer screenings for poor women at Planned Parenthood centers.
They claim that it’s due to Planned Parenthood being under Federal investigation, and yet, as the HuffPo reported yesterday, they have no problems giving money to Penn State, which is also under investigation.
Karen “Cry me a river” Handel, is a Washingon Lobbyist, former Georgia gubernatorial candidate, and a Komen board member who has been very outspoken about her anti-abortion views. Komen is denying that she had anything to do with it, but The Atlantic claims otherwise.
three sources with direct knowledge of the Komen decision-making process told me that the rule was adopted in order to create an excuse to cut off Planned Parenthood. (Komen gives out grants to roughly 2,000 organizations, and the new “no investigations” rule applies to only one so far.) The decision to create a rule that would cut funding to Planned Parenthood, according to these sources, was driven by the organization’s new senior vice president for public policy, Karen Handel, a former gubernatorial candidate from Georgia who is staunchly anti-abortion and who has said that since she is “pro-life, I do not support the mission of Planned Parenthood.” (The Komen grants to Planned Parenthood did not pay for abortion or contraception services, only cancer detection, according to all parties involved.)
(In the meantime, Komen has partnered with a gun manufacturer.)
Side note: On a Facebook discussion of this event, one woman commented, “I just hate the people who use abortions for birth control.” This thought usually crops up somewhere along the discussion and is so fucking stupid I want to reach through the computer and punch them in the face. Who the fuck made you the morality police?
1.) Women should be able to get 25 abortions if they so choose. There’s no “moral” difference between the first and the twentieth.
2.) Abortions are cheaper than women’s birth control, you moron. Women cannot control whether the impregnator uses contraceptives.
3.) You don’t pay for poor women’s abortions. You do pay for poor women’s hospital time for the birth, and the support of her children as long as they need those safety nets.
4.) The only reason abortion is even in this debate is because the whackadoodle lobbyist brought it in. Komen’s money has NEVER gone to abortions.
This war on poor women has got to stop.
